The procedure involves placing bone graft material into the deficient area, which acts as a scaffold for your body to grow new bone. The graft material can be synthetic (alloplastic), sourced from a tissue bank (allograft), or taken from another area of your own body (autograft). The graft is covered with a membrane to protect it and hold it in place while new bone forms. Healing typically takes three to six months, during which the graft integrates with your natural bone. After this period, the area is reassessed with a CT scan, and if sufficient bone has formed, implant placement can proceed.
