Or ask me — I can…

Can you combine dental treatment abroad with a family holiday? Yes — but it takes planning. Here's how couples and parents make dental tourism work without the guilt.
You and your partner both need dental work. Or you want to bring family while you get treated. Planning a dental trip for two (or more) is different from going solo — here's how to make it work.
The Maths: Why It Works Financially
Take a typical case — 10 veneers costing £8,000 in the UK. The same treatment in Istanbul: £2,000-3,000.
| Cost | Solo Trip | Couple Trip | Family of 4 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Treatment (10 veneers, Turkey) | £2,500 | £2,500 | £2,500 |
| Flights (return from UK) | £200 | £400 | £700 |
| Hotel (7 nights, 4-star) | £350 | £350 | £500 |
| Activities & food | £200 | £400 | £800 |
| Total | £3,250 | £3,650 | £4,500 |
| UK treatment only | £8,000 | £8,000 | £8,000 |
| You save | £4,750 | £4,350 | £3,500 |
Even bringing the whole family, you save £3,500. The holiday is essentially free — paid for by the difference between UK and Turkish dental prices.
How Couples Do It
The most common pattern: one partner needs dental work, the other doesn't.
The schedule that works:
- Day 1 (together): Arrive, settle into hotel, explore the neighbourhood
- Day 2 (split): Patient goes to clinic for consultation + prep. Partner explores the city solo or books a spa/hammam
- Day 3-4 (together): Lab fabrication days — both free to sightsee, take day trips, relax
- Day 5 (split): Patient returns for fitting. Partner does their own thing
- Day 6-7 (together): Final check in the morning, then full days together before flying home
The patient is only at the clinic for 3-4 appointments of 2-4 hours each. That's roughly 10-16 hours over 7 days. The rest is holiday.
"My husband came with me and we had an amazing time in Istanbul — he barely noticed I was having treatment"
Both partners need treatment? Even better. You save on hotel costs and travel, and the clinic may offer a package discount for two patients booking together.
How Families with Children Do It
This requires more planning but parents do it successfully every month.
Istanbul with Kids
Istanbul is a surprisingly family-friendly city:
- Miniaturk — miniature park with 130 scale models of Turkish landmarks. Kids love it.
- Istanbul Aquarium — one of Europe's largest, in Florya (beach district)
- Bosphorus ferry cruises — cheap, scenic, and kids enjoy being on the water
- Istanbul Toy Museum — small but engaging for under-10s
- Princes' Islands — car-free islands reached by ferry, horse carriages, beaches, picnic spots
- Grand Bazaar — older kids find the maze-like market fascinating
- Turkish ice cream vendors — the playful serving style entertains every age group
Antalya with Kids (Beach Alternative)
If your clinic is in Antalya rather than Istanbul, even better for families:
- Resort hotels with kids' clubs (supervised, all-inclusive)
- Mediterranean beaches with warm water
- Düden Waterfalls — dramatic cascading waterfall, easy walk
- Antalya Old Town (Kaleiçi) — narrow streets, harbour, ice cream
- Water parks (Land of Legends, Troy Aqua Park)
"We turned it into a family holiday in Antalya — the kids had the best week of their summer"
The "One Parent at Clinic" Schedule
If both parents travel with children:
Option A: One parent stays with kids
- Partner A goes to appointments while Partner B does activities with children
- Swap for any follow-up or fitting appointments
- Works best with children under 8 who need constant supervision
Option B: Kids' club + clinic
- Book a resort hotel with a supervised kids' club (common in Antalya, less so in central Istanbul)
- Both parents go to the clinic during kids' club hours (typically 9am-5pm)
- Afternoons and evenings are family time
Option C: Grandparent or relative joins
- A third adult provides childcare flexibility
- The "plus one" gets a holiday too
- Extra flight and hotel costs are still covered by dental savings
What About School?
Plan around school holidays — Turkish clinics are open year-round and don't slow down during UK school breaks. February half-term, Easter, and October half-term are popular. Summer holidays give the most flexibility for longer trips.
Destination Guide for Families
| Destination | Best for Couples | Best for Families | Key Advantage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Istanbul | City culture, nightlife, food scene | Older kids (8+), cultural experiences | History, food, sightseeing |
| Antalya | Beach resort, relaxation | All ages, especially young kids | Beach, resorts, kids' clubs |
| Budapest | European city break, thermal baths | Older kids, teens | Thermal spas, architecture |
| Dubai* | Luxury, familiar for expats | Resort-style, waterparks | Family infrastructure |
*Dubai for dental tourism makes sense only if combining with treatment in Turkey (stopover model) or if your case is small enough for local pricing.
The Guilt Factor: Addressing It Directly
"I feel selfish spending money on my teeth." You're spending less than you would at home. The savings literally fund a family holiday. This is the opposite of selfish — it's smart financial planning that benefits everyone.
"My partner will be bored while I'm at the clinic." Your partner gets 2-3 days of solo exploration in an incredible city while you're in appointments. Many partners report that their "free days" were highlights of the trip.
"The kids will be difficult in a foreign city." Kids adapt faster than adults. Turkish and Hungarian culture is extremely child-friendly. Restaurant staff will entertain your kids. Hotel pools keep younger children happy for hours. Older kids get a cultural experience that beats a week at Center Parcs.
"What if something goes wrong and I'm stuck abroad with children?" Build in buffer days. If your treatment overruns by a day, you have time. Travel insurance covering the family is £30-80 and gives peace of mind.
Booking Tips for Families
- Book your clinic first, hotel second — choose a hotel near the clinic to minimise travel time on appointment days
- Tell the clinic you're bringing family — many offer family-friendly scheduling (morning appointments so afternoons are free)
- Book flexible flights — pay the small premium for changeable tickets in case treatment runs over
- Download offline maps and translation apps — essential with kids who get impatient
- Pack entertainment for waiting rooms — tablets, colouring books, snacks. Clinic waiting times can be long
