What are Dental Bridges?

A dental bridge is a fixed dental restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth by joining an artificial tooth (or teeth) permanently to adjacent teeth or dental implants. The bridge "bridges" the gap created by missing teeth, restoring both function and appearance.

Bridges consist of two crowns on either side (abutment teeth) and artificial teeth in between (pontics). They're cemented in place and cannot be removed, unlike dentures. Bridges restore your ability to chew properly, maintain your face shape, and prevent remaining teeth from shifting.

Types of Dental Bridges

Traditional Bridge

Most common type. Crowns on both sides of the gap with artificial teeth in between.

Best for: When you have natural teeth on both sides of the gap

Cantilever Bridge

Anchored to teeth on only one side of the gap.

Best for: When teeth exist on only one side of the missing tooth

Maryland Bridge

Uses metal or porcelain framework bonded to backs of adjacent teeth. Minimal tooth preparation.

Best for: Front teeth, when you want to preserve tooth structure

Implant-Supported Bridge

Supported by dental implants instead of natural teeth. Most stable option.

Best for: Multiple missing teeth in a row, when you don't want to affect natural teeth
