Not ready for implants? Bridges, dentures, Maryland bridges and 4 more options compared — with UK vs Turkey costs for each.
A dental implant in the UK costs around £2,950. That's the number most people see — and the number that ends the conversation before it starts.
But here's the thing: that's not the only number that matters. And implants aren't the only option.
Whether you're not a surgical candidate, not ready for the timeline, or simply trying to understand all your options before committing, there are seven real alternatives worth knowing about. Some are temporary. Some last decades. One isn't really a solution at all.
Why Implants Aren't Always the Answer
Implants are considered the gold standard for missing teeth — they look, feel, and function like natural teeth, and with good bone density they can last a lifetime.
But not everyone qualifies. Active gum disease, insufficient bone density, uncontrolled diabetes, or heavy smoking can all disqualify you — at least temporarily. The treatment also takes 3–6 months from placement to crown fitting, which doesn't suit everyone's timeline or budget.
This is why it's worth understanding what else exists. Some alternatives are excellent long-term solutions. Some are stepping stones. And some are just stalling.
The 7 Alternatives
1. Dental Bridge
A bridge spans the gap left by a missing tooth, anchoring to the teeth on either side. The adjacent teeth are filed down and crowned, with an artificial tooth (pontic) suspended between them.
Best for: Single missing tooth with healthy neighbouring teeth.
Trade-off: You're permanently altering healthy teeth to support the bridge. If the anchor teeth fail later, the whole structure goes with them.
Lifespan: 10–15 years with good care.
For a detailed comparison, see our article on dental implants vs bridges.
2. Partial Denture
A removable appliance that clips onto remaining teeth to fill gaps. Comes in acrylic or metal (chrome cobalt) variants — metal is more durable and comfortable.
Best for: Multiple missing teeth, patients not ready for surgery, or as a temporary solution.
Trade-off: Removable and can feel bulky. Some patients struggle to adapt. Doesn't prevent bone loss in the jaw.
Lifespan: 5–7 years before relining or replacement.
3. Full Denture
Complete upper or lower tooth replacement for patients with no remaining natural teeth. Modern dentures are far better than the stereotype — properly fitted implant-retained versions can be remarkably stable.
Best for: Full arch tooth loss.
Trade-off: Traditional (non-implant-supported) dentures shift, require adhesive, and accelerate bone resorption over time. Not ideal for long-term bone health.
Lifespan: 5–8 years for the denture itself; bone loss is ongoing.
4. Resin-Bonded Bridge (Maryland Bridge)
A conservative bridge where the artificial tooth is held in place by metal or ceramic wings bonded to the backs of adjacent teeth — no grinding down of healthy teeth.
Best for: Front teeth, younger patients, or anyone who wants minimal tooth preparation.
Trade-off: Less stable than a traditional bridge and not suitable for high-bite-force positions (back teeth). Can debond and need recementing.
Lifespan: 5–10 years, sometimes longer.
5. Flexible Partial Denture (Valplast)
A lightweight, thermoplastic alternative to metal partials. Gum-coloured clasps blend in rather than showing metal hooks.
Best for: Patients who find metal partials uncomfortable or visible, or those who want an aesthetic interim solution.
Trade-off: Not as rigid as chrome partials — can feel flexier under chewing load. Harder to add teeth to later if more are lost.
Lifespan: 5–7 years.
6. Implant-Supported Denture
This is where implants and dentures overlap. Rather than a full fixed implant per tooth, 2–4 implants anchor a full arch denture — it clicks on and off for cleaning but stays put during eating and speaking.
Best for: Patients with multiple missing teeth or full arch loss who want stability without paying for individual implants per tooth.
Trade-off: Still involves surgery. Still requires adequate bone. But far less expensive than a full arch of individual implants.
Lifespan: The overdenture itself: 5–7 years. The implant fixtures: 20+ years.
7. Do Nothing
Worth acknowledging. Some patients do choose to leave a gap — particularly for non-visible back teeth.
The honest reality: This is rarely a good long-term decision. Neighbouring teeth drift into the gap. Bone at the extraction site resorbs. Bite mechanics shift, leading to wear and jaw joint strain. What starts as "I'll deal with it later" often becomes a more complex (and expensive) problem later.

What Each Costs: UK vs Turkey
| Treatment | UK Cost | Turkey Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Implant (single) | £2,950 | £400–550 |
| 3-Unit Dental Bridge | £1,500–2,400 | £480 (£160/unit) |
| Partial Denture | £500–800 | £150–300 |
| Full Denture | £800–1,200 | £300–600 |
| Implant-Supported Denture | £4,000–8,000 | £1,200–2,500 |
Turkey prices are based on verified clinic pricing across Istanbul, Antalya, and Izmir. Hungary and Poland offer similar savings — typically 50–65% below UK rates.
"My advice? Don't just go for the cheapest quote. Research the clinic properly, ask about their implant brands, and don't be swayed by rock-bottom prices without understanding what's included." — Patient from a MyDentalFly dental tourism Facebook group
The Real Question: Can You Actually Afford Implants?
Most people rule out implants based on UK prices. That's understandable — £2,950 per tooth is a serious commitment, and many people needing multiple implants are looking at five figures.
But that's the UK price.
In Turkey, a single standard implant — placed by an experienced implantologist, using reputable brands like MIS or Osstem — costs £400 to £550 all in. That's less than most dental bridges cost in the UK.
For patients needing two implants, the Turkey cost is often lower than one bridge in the UK. For patients needing four or more, the savings versus any of the alternatives above become significant.
This doesn't mean implants are always the right call. It means the decision should be made on clinical grounds — not on sticker shock from a UK price list.
Hungary and Poland offer similar savings, with strong traditions of dental tourism and internationally trained clinicians. The question of which destination suits your case is worth exploring.
The better question isn't "can I afford implants?" It's "what is the right solution for my specific case, and where should I get it?"

Getting the Right Answer for Your Mouth
The challenge with most dental tourism resources — directories, aggregators, lead-gen sites — is that they push you toward booking before you understand your own situation.
MyDentalFly works differently. Before you compare clinics or discuss prices, you complete a proper dental assessment: an interactive dental chart where you mark each tooth and its symptoms, followed by a health questionnaire. From that, we generate a dental package (dental package) — a preliminary treatment plan that lets you go into any clinic conversation knowing exactly what you're discussing.
Our Pearl AI assistant can also answer your specific questions before you commit to anything.
The result is that when clinics on our platform quote you, they're quoting on your actual case — not a vague "I think I need some work done."
Read the dental implants Turkey guide for a full picture of what treatment abroad involves.
Next Steps
The candidacy checker tells you in 60 seconds if you're suitable for implants. The dental assessment builds your bespoke dental package — mapping your teeth and matching you with the right clinic. The savings calculator shows verified clinic prices vs home costs.
We've verified every clinic on our platform and removed eight that didn't meet our standards — unlike directories that list anyone who pays. Your dental tourism consultant coordinates everything once you're ready.
