Alternatives to Dental Implants (2026)
Implants are not your only option. Bridges, dentures, and newer alternatives compared — with UK and abroad pricing.

Implants are not your only option. Bridges, dentures, and newer alternatives compared — with UK and abroad pricing.

Dental implants are the gold standard for replacing missing teeth. They are also £2,000-£5,500 per tooth in the UK. If that number stopped you in your tracks, you are not alone — and you are not out of options.

I am Adam Smith, Head of Patient Research at MyDentalFly. Here are the real alternatives, honestly compared.

Your 6 Options for Replacing Missing Teeth

1. Dental Implants (The Gold Standard)

A titanium screw placed in the jawbone, topped with a crown. Looks, feels, and functions like a real tooth. Lasts 20-25+ years with proper care.

UKTurkeyHungaryPoland
Single implant + crown£2,950£500-£800£700-£1,000£600-£900
All-on-4 (full arch)£18,000£3,500-£5,500£4,500-£6,500£4,000-£6,000

Best for: Long-term replacement, single or multiple missing teeth, people who want a permanent solution.

Downside: Cost in the UK. Requires adequate bone (or a graft). Surgery with healing time.

2. Dental Bridge (Fixed, No Surgery)

A false tooth held in place by crowns on the adjacent teeth. No surgery, no bone grafting, no implant.

UKTurkeyHungary
3-unit bridge£1,500-£2,500£400-£700£600-£1,000

Best for: Replacing 1-2 adjacent missing teeth when the neighbouring teeth already need crowns anyway.

Downside: Requires grinding down healthy adjacent teeth. Those teeth are permanently altered. Bridge lifespan: 10-15 years, then replacement needed. Does not prevent bone loss where the tooth is missing.

3. Partial Denture (Removable, Budget-Friendly)

A removable plate with replacement teeth attached. The cheapest option by far.

UKTurkeyHungary
Acrylic partial£700£150-£300£200-£400
Metal framework£1,000£250-£500£350-£600
Flexible (Valplast)£800£200-£400£300-£500

Best for: Budget-conscious patients, temporary solution while saving for implants, replacing multiple teeth.

Downside: Removable — you take it out to clean. Can feel bulky. Clasps may be visible. Accelerates bone loss in the jaw. Needs replacing every 5-10 years.

"I got a partial denture as a temporary fix while I saved for implants abroad. It did the job for two years." — patient from our community

4. Full Dentures (Both Arches)

Complete removable replacement for all teeth. Modern dentures are much better than the ones your grandparents wore, but they are still dentures.

UKTurkeyHungary
Full set (both arches)£1,200-£2,500£400-£800£500-£1,000

Best for: Patients who have lost all teeth and cannot afford implants.

Downside: They move. They limit what you can eat. They accelerate jawbone loss. Most denture wearers describe a significant reduction in quality of life compared to fixed teeth.

5. Maryland Bridge (Minimal Preparation)

A false tooth bonded to the back of adjacent teeth with metal or ceramic wings. Minimal drilling — no crowns needed on the anchor teeth.

UKAbroad
Maryland bridge£800-£1,500£300-£600

Best for: Single missing front tooth, younger patients, cases where adjacent teeth are healthy and should not be ground down.

Downside: Not as strong as a conventional bridge. Can debond. Only works for single teeth in low-stress positions (not molars).

6. Do Nothing (Seriously — Sometimes This Is OK)

If you have lost a back molar and it does not affect your bite or chewing, doing nothing is a legitimate option. Not every missing tooth needs replacing.

When doing nothing is fine: Back molar with no opposing tooth, wisdom teeth, teeth extracted for orthodontic reasons.

When doing nothing is risky: Front teeth (appearance and speech), teeth where the gap causes other teeth to drift, multiple missing teeth affecting chewing.

The Real Decision: Fix It Cheap Now or Fix It Right Once?

Here is what I have learned from reviewing hundreds of cases:

The denture-to-implant pipeline is real. Many patients get a partial denture as a budget fix, then 2-5 years later they are frustrated enough to get implants anyway. By that point, bone loss has made the implant case more complex (and more expensive). If implants are your long-term goal, getting them sooner is often cheaper overall.

The abroad option changes the maths. A single implant at £500-£800 in Turkey is comparable to a bridge in the UK (£1,500-£2,500). For the same money or less, you get the better long-term solution.

Not sure which option suits your situation? The dental health check takes 2 minutes and gives you a personalised recommendation. Pearl AI below can compare the costs of each option for your specific case.

Are dental implants worth the extra cost?

For most patients, yes — over 20 years, a single implant is cheaper than two bridge replacements or three sets of dentures. Implants also prevent bone loss, which keeps your facial structure intact. The exception: if you need full-arch replacement and cannot afford implants even abroad, modern dentures are a reasonable temporary solution.

Can I get a bridge instead of an implant for a front tooth?

Yes, but consider a Maryland bridge first — it preserves the adjacent teeth. A conventional bridge requires grinding down two healthy teeth to act as anchors. If those teeth are already damaged or crowned, a conventional bridge makes more sense.

How long can I wait before replacing a missing tooth?

The sooner the better. Adjacent teeth start shifting within months of extraction. Bone loss begins immediately and accelerates over the first year. If you are waiting for financial reasons, ask about socket preservation at the time of extraction — it maintains the bone for a future implant.

Is it worth going abroad just for a denture?

Probably not. The savings on a single denture (£300-£500) barely cover flights and hotel. Going abroad makes financial sense when you need implants, multiple crowns, or full-arch work — where the savings are £5,000-£20,000.
