Can't Find an NHS Dentist? 5 Options
8 million UK adults can't access NHS dental care. Here are 5 real alternatives — from dental schools to going abroad.

8 million UK adults can't access NHS dental care. Here are 5 real alternatives — from dental schools to going abroad.

Ninety-seven percent. That is the proportion of new patients who tried to register with an NHS dentist in the past year and were turned away. If you cannot find an NHS dentist in 2026, you are not alone — 8 million adults in England are in the same position. One in ten has resorted to DIY dentistry, using superglue or pulling teeth themselves. This is a crisis, and it is not getting better.

I am Adam Smith, Head of Patient Research at MyDentalFly. I spend my days reviewing clinic proposals and helping patients find dental care they can actually afford. Here are your five real options, ranked by cost — with an honest assessment of each.

Option 1: Keep Trying the NHS

The NHS has not disappeared. It is just extremely difficult to access.

How to actually find an NHS dentist:

  • Call the NHS helpline: 111 (dental option)
  • Use the NHS website: nhs.uk/find-a-dentist
  • Call practices directly every Monday morning — this is when cancellations open up
  • Ask your GP to refer you for urgent dental care if you are in pain
  • Contact your local Healthwatch — they can escalate access complaints

NHS Band pricing (England, 2026):

BandWhat It CoversCost
Band 1Check-up, diagnosis, X-rays, scale & polish£26.80
Band 2Fillings, root canals, extractions£73.50
Band 3Crowns, dentures, bridges£319.10

The prices are reasonable. The problem is getting through the door.

Honest assessment: If you need routine care and can wait 3-12 months, this is worth pursuing. If you need implants, veneers, or complex work, the NHS will not cover it anyway — implants are only available on the NHS in exceptional circumstances (cancer, severe trauma, congenital conditions).

Option 2: Dental Schools and Training Hospitals

This is the option most people do not know about.

UK dental schools offer treatment by supervised students at significantly reduced prices — sometimes free. The work is performed by final-year dental students under direct supervision from qualified consultants. It takes longer per appointment, but the quality is supervised.

Where to go:

  • King's College London Dental Institute
  • UCL Eastman Dental Hospital
  • Birmingham Dental Hospital
  • Manchester University Dental Hospital
  • Leeds Dental Institute
  • Newcastle Dental Hospital
  • Cardiff University Dental Hospital
  • Dundee Dental Hospital

Typical pricing: 50-80% less than private. Some treatments are free if they match a student's training requirements.

Honest assessment: Excellent for routine work, extractions, and some restorative procedures. Waiting lists can be long (2-6 months). Not suitable for complex implant cases or cosmetic work like veneers. Appointments are longer because students work more carefully.

Option 3: Private Dentist in the UK

When the NHS is not an option, most people default to private. Here is what that actually costs:

TreatmentLondonSouth EastMidlandsNorthScotland
Check-up + X-rays£80-£150£60-£120£50-£100£45-£90£50-£100
Single filling£130-£250£100-£200£90-£180£80-£160£80-£170
Root canal£500-£1,200£400-£900£350-£750£300-£650£350-£700
Zirconia crown£600-£1,000£500-£800£450-£700£400-£650£400-£700
Single implant£2,500-£5,500£2,200-£3,800£2,000-£3,200£1,800-£3,000£2,000-£3,200
20 crowns (full smile)£12,000-£20,000£10,000-£16,000£9,000-£14,000£8,000-£13,000£8,000-£14,000

"I was quoted £14,000 for crowns in London. That is more than I earned last year after tax." — a patient who contacted us in March 2026.

Honest assessment: Quality is high. Prices are brutal for anything beyond basic care. A single implant costs what a family holiday costs. Multiple implants or full-mouth work puts you in remortgage territory.

If those numbers made you wince, the savings calculator below uses real prices from verified clinics — you can see exactly what the same treatment costs at clinics we have personally vetted.

Option 4: Dental Finance and Payment Plans

Most UK dental practices offer finance. Here are the typical terms:

Finance TypeAPRTermExample: £3,000 implant
0% interest0%6-12 months£250-£500/month
Low-rate8-15%24-60 months£70-£140/month
Dental loan (Chrysalis, Tabeo)10-20%12-60 months£65-£150/month
Credit card20-30%Open-endedMinimum £90/month

Honest assessment: Finance makes UK treatment accessible, but you are still paying UK prices — just spread over time. A £10,000 All-on-4 on 5-year finance at 12% costs you £13,350 total. The same procedure abroad at £4,500 total (including flights and hotel) saves you nearly £9,000 compared to the financed UK price.

Option 5: Dental Treatment Abroad

523,000 UK patients went abroad for dental treatment in 2025. That number is up 50% in two years. The majority went to Turkey, Hungary, or Poland.

Here is what the same treatments cost at clinics we have personally vetted:

TreatmentUK Private (avg)TurkeyHungaryPolandYou Save
Single implant + crown£2,950£700-£1,200£900-£1,400£800-£1,300£1,650-£2,250
All-on-4 (per arch)£18,000£3,500-£5,500£4,500-£6,500£4,000-£6,000£12,000-£14,500
20 zirconia crowns£17,000£4,000-£6,000£5,000-£8,000£5,000-£7,000£9,000-£13,000
8 porcelain veneers£7,500£2,000-£3,000£2,500-£3,500£2,200-£3,200£4,000-£5,500

Those Turkey prices are from clinics charging £180-280 per zirconia crown — the ethical range. If a clinic quotes £100 or less per crown, something is missing. Our red flags checklist explains exactly what to watch for.

"I got quotes ranging from £3,500 to £9,000 for the same work — the cheapest wasn't always the worst." — a real patient from our Facebook community.

Honest assessment: The savings are real and significant for multiple-tooth work. Single fillings or one crown — not worth the trip. Four or more crowns, implants, or full-arch work — the savings pay for flights, hotel, and a holiday on top.

The risk is choosing badly. That is why we built an assessment tool that maps your teeth and tells you what treatment you actually need before you speak to anyone — your free Dental Health Report is worth around £50 and takes 2 minutes. No sales call, no commitment.

Which Option Is Right for You?

Need a check-up or filling? Try the NHS first (call 111). If the wait is too long, dental schools are your best-value option.

Need one crown or one implant? Private UK with 0% finance is probably the simplest route. The saving from going abroad is real but modest for a single tooth.

Need 4+ crowns, multiple implants, or full-arch work? This is where dental tourism makes financial sense. The saving on a full-mouth restoration can be £10,000-£20,000 — enough to justify the research, the travel, and the planning.

Not sure what you need? That is the most common situation. Take the 2-minute dental health check — it maps your teeth, tells you what treatment is appropriate, and gives you a personalised recommendation. No one tries to sell you anything. Pearl AI is available below if you have questions about any of these options.

Is it safe to get dental work abroad?

Yes, if you choose properly. Turkey has 35,000 licensed dentists and some of the best dental schools in Europe. The problem is a specific budget sub-market that cuts corners. We vet every clinic on our platform — and we have removed 8 clinics that did not meet our standards.

What does the NHS actually cover for dental implants?

Almost nothing. Implants are only available on the NHS if tooth loss was caused by head and neck cancer treatment, severe trauma, or a congenital condition (6+ missing teeth from birth). Everyone else pays privately or goes abroad.

How do I know if I need implants or crowns?

This depends on whether the tooth root is still healthy. If the root is intact, a crown covers and protects it. If the tooth is missing or the root is damaged beyond repair, an implant replaces the entire structure. The dental health check helps you work this out in 2 minutes.

Can I get an NHS emergency appointment for dental pain?

Yes. Call 111 and ask for emergency dental services. You should be seen within 24 hours for genuine emergencies (severe pain, swelling, trauma). This is Band 1 treatment (£26.80) and does not require being registered with a practice.

What if something goes wrong with dental treatment abroad?

Reputable clinics offer written warranties (5-10 years). At MyDentalFly, your deposit is held by us — not the clinic — and is not released until you arrive, get your consultation, and confirm you are happy to proceed. If you are not, you can switch to another clinic on the platform.
