If a dentist has told you that you need a bone graft before implants, you probably have questions. The procedure sounds intimidating, the UK cost adds significantly to an already expensive treatment, and you want to know if it is truly necessary. Here is what we have learned from reviewing hundreds of implant cases.

What Is a Dental Bone Graft?

A bone graft adds bone material to your jaw to create a strong foundation for dental implants. Your jaw bone starts to shrink (resorb) after teeth are extracted — sometimes within months. If there is not enough bone height or width, an implant cannot be placed safely.

There are four main types:

TypeMaterialHealing TimeCost UKCost Abroad
AutograftYour own bone (from chin, jaw, or hip)4–6 months£800–£1,500£300–£600
AllograftDonated human bone (processed, sterilised)3–6 months£400–£900£200–£400
XenograftBovine (cow) bone (Bio-Oss is the most common brand)4–8 months£400–£1,000£200–£500
SyntheticCalcium phosphate or hydroxyapatite3–6 months£400–£800£150–£350

Most common in dental tourism: Xenograft (Bio-Oss by Geistlich) combined with a collagen membrane (Bio-Gide). This is the gold standard for implant site preparation and the material used by the vast majority of quality clinics worldwide.

When Do You Need a Bone Graft?

You probably need a bone graft if:

  • Teeth have been missing for more than 6 months
  • You have worn dentures for years (dentures accelerate bone loss)
  • You had a tooth extracted and no socket preservation was done
  • Your CBCT scan shows insufficient bone height or width for implants
  • You need a sinus lift (a specific type of bone graft for upper jaw implants)

You probably do not need a bone graft if:

  • Teeth were recently extracted with socket preservation
  • Bone volume is adequate on your CBCT scan
  • You are having All-on-4 (which uses angled implants to avoid areas of bone loss)

Important: A clinic that says you need a bone graft should show you the CBCT scan and explain exactly where the bone is insufficient. If they cannot show you, ask why.

Sinus Lift: The Most Common Bone Graft for UK Patients

If you need upper jaw implants and have been told you need a "sinus lift," this is what it means:

The maxillary sinuses sit directly above your upper back teeth. When these teeth are lost, the sinus membrane drops down and the bone thins. A sinus lift raises the membrane and packs bone graft material underneath to create enough depth for implants.

Sinus Lift TypeUK CostTurkey CostHungary Cost
Closed (internal) — done through the implant hole, minimal cases£500–£1,000 per side£200–£400£300–£500
Open (lateral window) — larger procedure for significant bone loss£1,000–£2,000 per side£400–£800£500–£900

A patient needing bilateral open sinus lifts in the UK might pay £2,000–£4,000 just for the grafting, before any implants are placed. In Turkey, the same procedure costs £800–£1,600.

Should I Get a Bone Graft in the UK or Abroad?

This depends on complexity:

Get it done locally (UK) if:

  • You need a single small graft and the cost is manageable
  • You have a complex medical history (blood disorders, bisphosphonate use, autoimmune conditions)
  • You are anxious about having surgery abroad

Consider having it abroad if:

  • You need multiple graft sites or bilateral sinus lifts
  • The bone graft is part of a larger implant treatment plan (combining saves a trip)
  • The total UK cost exceeds £3,000–£4,000

The most common approach we see: UK patients have the bone graft AND implant placement done in the same trip abroad. This requires a clinic with proper CBCT planning and surgical expertise — but it avoids two separate surgical episodes and two separate recovery periods.

What to Ask the Clinic About Bone Grafting

  1. What graft material do you use? (Bio-Oss is the gold standard — be wary of unnamed "synthetic" materials)
  2. What membrane do you use? (Bio-Gide or similar resorbable collagen membrane)
  3. Do you perform the CBCT scan in-house or refer out?
  4. How many sinus lifts does your surgeon perform per month?
  5. What is the healing protocol — how long before implants can be placed?
  6. Will I receive written post-operative instructions and a prescription for antibiotics/pain relief?

Recovery After a Bone Graft

First 48 hours: Swelling, minor bleeding, discomfort managed with ibuprofen and paracetamol Week 1: Soft food only, no smoking, no straws, gentle rinses with salt water Week 2-4: Gradual return to normal diet, stitches dissolve or are removed Month 3-6: Healing period before implants can be placed (varies by graft type and extent)

If you are having the graft abroad, plan to stay 3–5 days for monitoring. Most patients fly home on day 3–4 without issues.

Your Next Step

If you have been told you need a bone graft, the first step is getting a proper CBCT scan to understand exactly what is needed. Our dental health check can help you understand your situation before you start comparing clinic quotes.
