A single dental crown in the UK costs £500–£1,000. The same crown in Turkey or Hungary costs £120–£280. Here is what that difference actually means — and when it is worth travelling.
By Adam Smith, Head of Patient Research at MyDentalFly. Updated June 2026.
If you need one crown, it probably is not worth flying to Turkey. If you need four or more, the maths changes dramatically. After comparing prices from 40+ UK clinics and 30+ international clinics, here is the honest breakdown.
UK Dental Crown Prices in 2026
| Crown Type | London | South East | Midlands | North | Scotland |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) | £400–£700 | £350–£600 | £300–£500 | £280–£450 | £300–£500 |
| Full zirconia | £600–£1,000 | £500–£800 | £450–£700 | £400–£650 | £400–£700 |
| E-max (lithium disilicate) | £650–£1,100 | £550–£900 | £500–£750 | £450–£700 | £450–£750 |
| Gold | £700–£1,200 | £600–£1,000 | £500–£850 | £500–£800 | £500–£800 |
NHS: Crowns fall under Band 3 (£319.10 in England). However, NHS crowns are typically PFM or base-metal — not the zirconia or E-max materials that look like natural teeth. And getting an NHS appointment for a crown can take months.
Crown Prices Abroad (Vetted Clinics)
| Crown Type | Turkey | Hungary | Poland | Spain |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Full zirconia | £120–£280 | £180–£350 | £170–£300 | £200–£400 |
| E-max | £150–£300 | £200–£380 | £190–£320 | £220–£420 |
| PFM | £80–£150 | £120–£200 | £100–£180 | £150–£250 |
Important note on pricing: If a Turkish clinic quotes under £100 per zirconia crown, they are almost certainly using monolithic zirconia (cheaper, less natural-looking, no layering) or a low-cost lab. A good crown requires 45–90 minutes of lab work per unit. At £60–£80 per crown, the maths does not allow for premium materials and experienced technicians.
When Does It Make Sense to Go Abroad for Crowns?
Here is the break-even analysis including travel costs:
| Number of Crowns | UK Cost (average) | Turkey Cost (inc. travel) | Saving | Worth Travelling? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 crown | £700 | £550 (crown + flights + 1 night) | £150 | Probably not |
| 4 crowns | £2,800 | £1,100 | £1,700 | Yes |
| 8 crowns | £5,600 | £1,700 | £3,900 | Definitely |
| 12 crowns | £8,400 | £2,200 | £6,200 | Definitely |
| 20 crowns (full arch) | £14,000 | £3,500 | £10,500 | Absolutely |
The tipping point is around 4 crowns. Below that, the saving is marginal once you factor in flights (£100–£300 return), hotel (£40–£100/night), and time off work.

Zirconia vs E-max vs PFM: Which Crown Material Should You Choose?
This is the question most UK patients get wrong, because clinics abroad sometimes default to the cheapest option.
Zirconia (best for back teeth and full-arch)
- Strength: Extremely strong — 900–1,200 MPa flexural strength
- Aesthetics: Good, but can look opaque unless layered or stained
- Best for: Molars, premolars, bridges, patients who grind
- Cost abroad: £120–£280 per crown
- Brands to ask for: IPS e.max ZirCAD, Prettau, Cercon, Katana, GC Initial
E-max / Lithium Disilicate (best for front teeth)
- Strength: Good — 360–400 MPa
- Aesthetics: Excellent — translucent, mimics natural enamel
- Best for: Front teeth, veneers, single crowns in visible areas
- Cost abroad: £150–£300 per crown
- Brands to ask for: IPS e.max CAD, IPS e.max Press
PFM — Porcelain Fused to Metal (older technology)
- Strength: Good, but the metal substructure can show as a grey line at the gum
- Aesthetics: Acceptable but dated — the grey line is the giveaway
- Best for: Budget option, back teeth where aesthetics are less critical
- Cost abroad: £80–£150 per crown
- Note: Most modern clinics are moving away from PFM
Our recommendation: Zirconia for back teeth, E-max for front teeth. If a clinic only offers one material for all teeth, ask why.
What UK Patients Should Know About Crown Preparation
The most important question to ask any clinic — at home or abroad — is: how much tooth will you remove?
A well-fitting crown requires 1.0–1.5mm of tooth reduction. This preserves the nerve (pulp) and gives the crown enough material to be strong without being bulky.
The "Turkey teeth" problem with crowns: Some budget clinics grind teeth down to sharp pegs (2–3mm reduction) because it is faster and requires less skill. This exposes the pulp in 20–40% of cases, leading to root canal treatment within 5 years (Christensen et al., 2017).
What to ask: "What is your preparation protocol? How much tooth structure do you remove?" A good dentist will explain that they follow minimal-preparation principles and will show you the preparation on a digital model before starting.
The Process: Getting Crowns Abroad from the UK
Trip 1 (3–5 days)
- Day 1: Consultation, CBCT scan (if implants involved), digital impressions, shade matching, temporary crowns fitted
- Day 2–3: Lab work (a good lab needs 2–3 days per 10 crowns)
- Day 3–5: Final crowns fitted, occlusion checked, adjustments made, night-guard fitted (if full-arch)
Between trips
- Wear temporary crowns if staged
- Follow-up photos via WhatsApp at 2 weeks
Trip 2 (optional, 1–2 days)
- Only needed for complex cases or if adjustments are required
- Some patients combine with a holiday
Total time abroad: 3–5 days for most crown cases. Budget for one follow-up trip if you are having 12+ crowns.
Your Next Step
If you are comparing crown prices, start with understanding how many crowns you actually need and what material is appropriate. Our dental health check gives you a personalised recommendation in 2 minutes — then you can compare quotes properly.
