Dentures vs Implants: Which Is Right for You?
Dentures cost less upfront but implants last decades. Here's the honest comparison — including how dental tourism changes the maths completely.

Dentures cost less upfront but implants last decades. Here's the honest comparison — including how dental tourism changes the maths completely.

Dentures are cheaper. Implants are permanent. But the decision isn't just about money — it's about bone loss, comfort, confidence, and what your jaw can actually support. Here's the honest comparison your dentist might not give you.

The Core Difference

Dentures sit on top of your gums. They're removable. You take them out at night, clean them separately, and use adhesive to keep them in place during the day.

Implants are titanium posts screwed into your jawbone. They're permanent. Crowns, bridges, or a fixed prosthetic arch attaches to the posts. They feel and function like natural teeth.

Lifespan5-8 years before replacement15-25+ years (implant posts: lifetime)
AppearanceCan look artificial over timeIndistinguishable from natural teeth
ComfortPressure on gums, sore spots commonNo gum pressure

Turkey cost (full mouth)£300-800£7,600-14,000

The Bone Loss Problem Nobody Mentions

This is the most important factor that dentists don't emphasise enough with denture patients.

When teeth are extracted and replaced with dentures, the jawbone has nothing to stimulate it. It begins to resorb (shrink). Over 10 years, denture wearers lose 40-60% of their jawbone volume.

What this means in practice:

  • Dentures that fit well in year 1 become loose by year 3-5
  • You need denture relines every 1-2 years (£150-300 each time)
  • After 10-15 years, some patients don't have enough bone left for implants even if they wanted them
  • Facial structure changes — the "sunken face" look common in long-term denture wearers

Implants prevent this. The titanium posts stimulate the bone just like natural tooth roots, maintaining jaw structure indefinitely.

"My dentures were fine for the first couple of years but now they're loose and I'm using adhesive every day"

The Real Cost Over 10 Years

The upfront price comparison is misleading. Here's what each option actually costs over a decade:

Dentures: 10-Year Cost

ItemCost (UK)Frequency
Initial dentures£1,500Once
Relines£200Every 1-2 years (×6)
Replacement dentures£1,500At year 7-8
Adhesive£15/monthMonthly (×120)
10-year total£6,500

Implants (All-on-4, UK): 10-Year Cost

ItemCost (UK)Frequency
All-on-4 (both arches)£36,000Once
Annual check-ups£150Yearly (×10)
Prosthetic replacement£0Not needed within 10 years
10-year total£37,500

Implants (All-on-4, Turkey): 10-Year Cost

ItemCostFrequency
All-on-4 both arches (Turkey)£10,000Once
Flights + hotel (2 trips)£1,500Trip 1 + Trip 2
Annual UK check-ups£150Yearly (×10)
10-year total£13,000

The punchline: Implants in Turkey cost roughly double what dentures cost in the UK over 10 years — but you get permanent, natural-feeling teeth that preserve your bone structure. Over 20 years, implants in Turkey are actually cheaper than dentures because dentures need replacing every 7-8 years.

Who Should Get Dentures

Dentures are the right choice when:

  • Budget is genuinely constrained — even with dental tourism pricing, All-on-4 at £7,600-14,000 is a significant sum
  • Bone loss is too advanced for implants — after years of missing teeth or denture wear, there may not be enough bone. Bone grafting can help but adds cost and time
  • Medical conditions prevent surgery — uncontrolled diabetes, certain heart conditions, bisphosphonate medications, and active cancer treatment can make implant surgery risky
  • Age and health priorities — a patient in their 80s with health concerns may not want to undergo surgery, and dentures serve them well
  • Temporary solution while saving — dentures now, implants later (but don't wait too long — bone loss makes implants harder)

Who Should Get Implants

Implants are the right choice when:

  • You want permanent teeth — no removal, no adhesive, eat anything
  • You're under 70 and in reasonable health — decades of benefit ahead
  • You can afford it — especially with dental tourism pricing
  • Bone is adequate — or you're willing to do bone grafting
  • You want to prevent facial changes — implants preserve jaw structure

The Hybrid Option: Implant-Supported Dentures

There's a middle ground that many people don't know about. Implant-supported overdentures use 2-4 implants per arch to anchor a removable denture. The denture clips onto the implants — secure enough to eat steak, removable for cleaning.

OptionUK Cost (per arch)Turkey Cost (per arch)
Traditional denture£250-1,250£150-400
2-implant overdenture£4,000-6,000£1,500-2,500
4-implant overdenture£7,000-10,000£2,500-4,000
All-on-4 fixed bridge£18,000£3,800-7,000

Implant-supported overdentures in Turkey cost roughly the same as traditional dentures in the UK. This is the option most dental tourists overlook.

Making the Decision

Ask yourself these questions:

  1. Can I afford implants with dental tourism pricing? If £7,600-14,000 (both arches in Turkey) is feasible, implants are almost always the better long-term choice
  2. Am I healthy enough for surgery? Ask your GP. Most adults under 75 in reasonable health are candidates
  3. Do I have enough bone? A CBCT scan reveals this. If bone is insufficient, grafting adds £150-500 per site in Turkey
  4. How important is eating normally? If you want to eat apples, steak, and crusty bread without thinking, implants are the only option that delivers this
  5. How do I feel about a removable appliance? Some people adapt well to dentures. Others never feel comfortable. There's no way to predict which group you'll fall into

Getting an Assessment

Before deciding, get a proper clinical assessment. Our dental assessment creates an Intelligent Treatment Plan based on your dental chart — showing you what treatments your mouth actually needs, then comparing real clinic prices for both implant and denture options.

Next Steps

The candidacy checker tells you in 60 seconds if implants are an option for you. The dental assessment maps your teeth and recommends the right approach. If implants are viable, the savings calculator shows what they cost at verified clinics abroad.
