Tap a question — Pearl answers
Or ask me — I can…

A root canal in the UK costs £250-800. In Turkey, it's £50-150. The savings are real — but is it worth a flight for a single procedure? Here's the honest answer.
A root canal on a molar in the UK costs £250-800 (NHS to private). In Turkey, the same procedure costs £50-150. Add a crown on top — £350-850 in the UK, £120-220 in Turkey — and the total for root canal + crown drops from £600-1,650 in the UK to £170-370 in Turkey.
But here's the question nobody asks: is a saving of £430-1,280 worth a return flight and 2-3 days in Istanbul?
For a single root canal, probably not. For a root canal as part of a larger treatment plan, absolutely.
Root Canal Pricing: UK vs Turkey vs Hungary
| Procedure | UK (NHS) | UK (Private) | Turkey | Hungary |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Root canal (front tooth) | £70 (Band 2) | £250-450 | £50-100 | £80-150 |
| Root canal (premolar) | £70 (Band 2) | £350-600 | £60-120 | £100-200 |
| Root canal (molar) | £70 (Band 2) | £450-800 | £80-150 | £120-250 |
| Post and core | N/A | £150-300 | £40-80 | £60-120 |
| Zirconia crown (after root canal) | £282 (Band 3) | £350-850 | £120-220 | £170-310 |
| Root canal + crown (molar) | £282 | £800-1,650 | £200-370 | £290-560 |
NHS prices are fixed band prices — remarkably cheap but come with long wait times. Private prices reflect central England averages.
What a Root Canal Actually Involves
The procedure is the same everywhere — Turkey, UK, or Hungary:
- X-ray to see the root canals and assess infection
- Local anaesthesia — the tooth is completely numb
- Access — the dentist drills through the crown to reach the pulp chamber
- Cleaning — infected nerve tissue is removed using thin files that go down each root canal
- Shaping — canals are widened and smoothed to accept filling material
- Filling — canals are sealed with gutta-percha (a rubber-like material)
- Temporary filling — the access hole is sealed
- Crown (separate appointment) — a permanent crown protects the weakened tooth
Duration: 45-90 minutes per tooth (molars take longer because they have 3-4 root canals vs 1-2 for front teeth).
Pain: During treatment, none — anaesthesia is effective. After treatment, mild ache for 2-5 days managed by ibuprofen.
When It Makes Sense to Fly for a Root Canal
Yes — Fly to Turkey When:
You need multiple root canals. If you need 2-3 root canals plus crowns, the savings add up:
- 3 × root canal + crown in UK (private): £2,400-4,950
- 3 × root canal + crown in Turkey: £600-1,110
- Flights + 3 nights hotel: £350-600
- Net saving: £1,340-3,240
It's part of a bigger treatment plan. If you need a root canal plus implants, veneers, or other work, adding a root canal to the trip costs £50-150 extra — essentially free compared to UK pricing.
You can't get an NHS appointment. NHS dental access varies wildly by region. If you're looking at an 8-week wait for an NHS root canal or £800 for a private one, Turkey starts looking practical.
You need a retreatment. Failed root canals need retreating — a more complex procedure costing £500-1,200 privately in the UK. In Turkey: £100-250. The savings on retreatment alone can justify the trip.
No — Stay Local When:
It's a single straightforward root canal. Flying to Turkey for one root canal saves £200-500 after travel costs. Not enough to justify the time and logistics.
You're in pain right now. Root canal emergencies need same-day treatment. Book the fastest available appointment locally.
You have access to affordable NHS care. At £70 (NHS Band 2), a root canal on the NHS is extraordinarily cheap. If you have an NHS dentist, use them for this.
Root Canal Quality: Is Turkey as Good?
The procedure is standardised globally. But there are differences in technology:
| Technology | UK Average | Turkish Dental Tourism Clinics |
|---|---|---|
| Rotary endodontic files | Standard | Standard |
| Dental microscope | Specialist only (£200+ extra) | Common in larger clinics |
| CBCT for complex cases | Specialist referral | In-house |
| Rubber dam isolation | Standard | Standard |
| Electronic apex locator | Common | Standard |
Turkish clinics handling international patients often have more advanced endodontic equipment than average UK practices — because they've invested in technology to attract dental tourists.
The dental microscope is significant. It allows the dentist to see root canals at 25x magnification, finding hidden canals that a standard X-ray might miss. In the UK, you'd be referred to an endodontist (£800-1,500) for microscope-assisted root canal. In Turkey, many general clinics have microscopes.
The Root Canal + Crown Combo
A root-canalled tooth needs a crown. Without one, the brittle, hollowed-out tooth will eventually fracture — often catastrophically, requiring extraction.
The staging question: Can you get the root canal and crown in one trip?
Yes. Most Turkish clinics complete root canal + crown in 3-5 days:
- Day 1: Root canal treatment
- Day 2-3: Lab fabrication of the crown
- Day 4: Crown fitting
- Day 5: Final check, fly home
Some clinics even offer same-day crowns using CAD/CAM (CEREC) technology — the crown is milled in-house while you wait. Quality is comparable to lab-made crowns for single-unit restorations.
What If the Root Canal Fails?
Root canal success rates are 85-97% depending on the tooth and complexity. Failure means the infection returns — typically within 2-5 years.
If your Turkish root canal fails:
- Contact the clinic (most offer 1-2 year warranty on root canals)
- Get assessed by a UK dentist
- Options: retreatment (locally or return to Turkey) or extraction + implant
- If retreatment is needed in Turkey, the root canal itself may be covered under warranty; you'd pay for flights and hotel
This is one reason to combine root canals with larger treatment plans rather than flying for a root canal alone — the warranty logistics are simpler when you have an ongoing relationship with the clinic.
