A single crown costs £500-£1,000 in the UK vs £120-£280 abroad. After comparing prices from 40+ UK clinics and 30+ international clinics, here is the honest breakdown for British patients.
A dental crown in the UK costs £600-£1,200. Abroad, the same crown with the same material starts at £180. You're wondering if the quality is really the same — and what the catch is.
UK Crown Prices by Material (2026)
| Crown Type | UK Private Price | NHS Price | Lifespan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) | £400 - £700 | £319.10 | 10-15 years |
| All-ceramic (E.max) | £600 - £1,000 | Not available | 15-20 years |
| Zirconia | £500 - £900 | Not available | 15-25 years |
| Gold | £700 - £1,200 | £319.10 (rare) | 20-30 years |
| Composite/temporary | £200 - £400 | £319.10 | 3-5 years |
E.max crowns are lithium disilicate ceramic. They look like natural teeth — translucent and light. Zirconia is stronger but slightly more opaque. Better for molars where you need durability over aesthetics.
NHS crowns work fine. But you get what the dentist thinks is clinically appropriate, not necessarily what looks best.
The Math on Going Abroad
| Crown Type | UK | Turkey | Hungary | Poland |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PFM | £550 | £120-£180 | £150-£250 | £140-£220 |
| E.max | £800 | £180-£280 | £220-£350 | £200-£300 |
| Zirconia | £700 | £150-£250 | £200-£300 | £180-£280 |
One crown in Turkey: £250 + £200 flights + £80 hotel = £530. UK cost: £800. You save £270. Barely worth the hassle.
Ten crowns in Turkey: £2,500 + £200 flights + £400 hotel = £3,100. UK cost: £8,000. You save £4,900.
Twenty crowns (full smile makeover): £5,000 + £200 flights + £560 hotel = £5,760. UK cost: £16,000. You save £10,240.
The tipping point is around four crowns. Below that, stay local. Above that, the savings get serious.
Why You Might Need Multiple Crowns
Most crown patients don't need just one. Here's why:
Replacing old metalwork. Those silver crowns from the 1990s look dated. If you have eight of them, that's £6,400 to replace in the UK.
Grinding damage. Bruxism wears down multiple teeth at once. You can't crown just one when the adjacent teeth are equally damaged.
Root canal aftermath. Every root canal needs a crown. Multiple root canals mean multiple crowns — and these often happen in clusters when old fillings fail.
Smile makeovers. Combining veneers on front teeth with crowns on damaged back teeth. Common when people want their whole smile fixed.
Implant crowns. Each implant needs its crown. Four implants mean four crowns on top — an extra £3,200 in the UK.
Quality Differences: Real or Imaginary?
The ceramic is identical. E.max from Ivoclar Vivadent is the same product whether you're in Manchester or Istanbul. Zirconia blanks come from the same global suppliers.
What varies is the dental lab work.
UK labs charge £200-£400 per crown. Turkish labs charge £30-£80. Both can produce excellent work — the difference is labour costs, not capability.
Top Turkish labs use the same CAD/CAM technology as UK labs. Some are actually more advanced because they're newer facilities with recent equipment.
The dentist's preparation matters more than the lab anyway. How well they shape your tooth determines how well the crown fits.
CEREC Same-Day Crowns
Some clinics mill crowns on-site using CEREC technology. Digital scan, mill from ceramic block, fit the same day. No temporary crown or second visit.
UK CEREC crown: £700-£1,200 Turkey CEREC crown: £200-£350
Same-day crowns are convenient but milled from a single block rather than hand-layered. Fine for back teeth. For front teeth, hand-layered ceramics still look more natural.
The Break-Even Analysis
Single crown: Stay in the UK. The £270 saving doesn't justify international travel.
2-3 crowns: Borderline. Depends on your priorities and schedule.
4-8 crowns: Abroad becomes attractive. You're looking at £2,000-£4,000 savings.
8+ crowns: No contest. The savings hit £5,000-£15,000 territory.
Factor in that multiple crowns abroad take 5-7 days total — similar to the multiple UK appointments you'd need anyway.
The quality question isn't about the country. It's about the specific clinic and dentist you choose.
