About This Treatment

Root canal treatment (also called endodontic treatment) is a procedure to save a tooth that is badly decayed, infected, or damaged. Inside every tooth is a soft tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. When this pulp becomes infected — through deep decay, a crack, or trauma — it causes severe pain and can lead to an abscess if left untreated. During a root canal, the dentist removes the infected pulp, cleans and disinfects the hollow canals inside the tooth, and fills them with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha. The tooth is then sealed, and in most cases a crown is placed on top to restore its strength. Modern root canal treatment is performed with magnification and rotary instruments, making it much more comfortable and efficient than in the past. Despite its reputation, root canal treatment is no more uncomfortable than having a filling. The procedure actually relieves the severe toothache caused by infection. Most patients feel immediate improvement once the infected pulp is removed.

Duration

1-2 hours per tooth, completed in 1-2 appointments

Stay Required

3-5 days

Visits

1 visit (1-2 appointments, plus crown fitting if included)

Materials

Dentsply ProTaper rotary files, Gutta-percha, Endodontic sealers (AH Plus, BioRoot)

Typically Included

  • Consultation and diagnostic X-ray
  • Local anaesthetic
  • Removal of infected pulp tissue
  • Canal cleaning, shaping, and disinfection
  • Filling of canals with gutta-percha
  • Temporary filling or seal

Not Usually Included

  • Crown to protect the treated tooth (quoted separately but strongly recommended)
  • Flights and travel insurance
  • Retreatment if a previously treated canal re-infects (quoted separately)

Good Candidates

  • Patients with a severely decayed tooth where the pulp is compromised
  • Those with a persistent toothache, especially pain that worsens at night
  • People with a dental abscess or swelling
  • Patients who want to save a natural tooth rather than extract it

Risks & Considerations

  • A small percentage of root canals fail and require retreatment (5-10%)
  • The tooth becomes more brittle without a crown and may fracture
  • Very rare risk of instrument separation inside the canal
  • Occasional flare-up of pain for a day or two after treatment

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do root canal treatment cost in Budapest?

Root Canal Treatment in Budapest typically cost £120-£250 per treatment. This is significantly less than the UK average of £600.

Is Budapest safe for root canal treatment?

Yes. Budapest is a well-established dental tourism destination. MyDentalFly only lists verified clinics with international accreditations. The same implant brands and materials used in the UK are available at partner clinics.

How long do I need to stay in Budapest for root canal treatment?

You'll typically need to stay 3-5 days in Budapest. Most treatments can be completed in a single trip.

Is a root canal painful?

The procedure itself is done under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain. Most patients say the relief from the toothache is immediate. Mild soreness for 1-2 days after treatment is normal.

Do I need a crown after a root canal?

In most cases, yes. A root-canal-treated tooth is weaker and more prone to fracture. A crown protects and strengthens it. Back teeth almost always need crowns; front teeth may sometimes be managed with a filling.

How long does a root-canal-treated tooth last?

With a good crown and proper oral hygiene, a root-canal-treated tooth can last a lifetime. Studies show success rates above 90% at 10 years.

Why is Budapest called the Dental Capital of Europe?

Hungary has been a dental tourism destination since the 1980s, originally serving Austrian and German patients. Budapest now treats over 100,000 international dental patients annually. The combination of highly trained dentists, EU regulation, and prices 50-70% lower than Western Europe created this reputation.

How does Budapest compare to Turkey for dental work?

Budapest offers EU regulatory standards and proximity to the UK (2.5-hour flight), making follow-up visits straightforward. Turkey generally offers lower prices, especially for large-scale work like full-mouth restorations. Both destinations have excellent clinics — the best choice depends on your treatment needs and preferences.
