Root canal treatment (also called endodontic treatment) is a procedure to save a tooth that is badly decayed, infected, or damaged. Inside every tooth is a soft tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. When this pulp becomes infected — through deep decay, a crack, or trauma — it causes severe pain and can lead to an abscess if left untreated. During a root canal, the dentist removes the infected pulp, cleans and disinfects the hollow canals inside the tooth, and fills them with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha.
